Role Purpose
Trócaire is now seeking a Chief Financial Officer to provide strategic financial leadership to the organisation by leading the Global Finance function (including Ireland). The CFO will offer financial strategy, planning, governance and operational delivery ensuring the organisations financial sustainability and integrity in a complex, multi country operating environment.
The CFO will act as a strategic partner to the Executive Leadership Team and Board, supporting informed decision-making to establish long-range goals, strategies and effective risk management.
Reporting & Key Relationships
The CFO reports to the Director of Corporate Services and is a member of the Corporate Services Management team. The role includes:
- Leadership of a finance team of approximately 13 staff directly, with additional oversight and support for around 15 country‑based Finance & Administration Managers
- Regular engagement with the Trócaire and Trócaire Northern Ireland Boards and Board sub‑committees, particularly Audit & Risk.
- Occasional international travel (approximately twice per year)

Key responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership
· Develop and implement Trócaire’s financial strategy in collaboration with the Board and Executive Leadership Team
· Provide clear, relevant, and timely financial reporting and insight to support strategic decision‑making
· Act as the principal financial advisor to Boards, Audit & Risk Committee and Executive Leadership Team
Financial Risk, Compliance & Governance
· Design and implement frameworks to manage financial risk across complex international ventures in Trócaire’s countries of operation
· Promote a strong culture of risk awareness, compliance, and accountability
· Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, standards, and reporting requirements
Financial Management & Reporting
· Ensure the integrity of financial and management reporting across the organisation
· Oversee preparation of statutory accounts in compliance with Charities SORP and legal requirements
· Lead relationships with external auditors and regulators
· Facilitate internal audits, donor audits, and due diligence processes, and ensure timely response to findings
Systems Controls & Transformation
· Ensure the effectiveness of internal controls, accounting systems, and financial processes
· Lead financial transformation initiatives, including process re‑engineering, digitalisation, and knowledge management
· Work with enterprise systems teams to maintain and enhance financial and information systems
Budgeting & Financial Planning
· Lead the annual budgeting process and mid‑year reviews
· Develop and maintain a multi‑annual financial framework aligned to organisational strategy
· Ensure strong value‑for‑money assessment across programmes, investments, and operations, both overseas and in Ireland
Treasury & Cash Management
· Oversee treasury and cash‑flow management, including foreign exchange exposure
· Manage banking, insurance, and professional advisory relationships
· Ensure treasury activities align with Board‑approved investment policies
Business Partnership
· Provide strategic financial support across all divisions and country offices
· Support increasingly complex institutional funding and donor requirements
· Oversee financial management of subsidiary entities, currently Trócaire Northern Ireland
· Act as primary financial contact for legal matters relating to contracts and bequests
Leadership & People Management
· Lead and develop a high‑performing global finance function
· Drive change, innovation, and continuous improvement within the finance team
· Support staff development, succession planning, and knowledge sharing
· Ensure effective performance management, wellbeing, and compliance with organisational policies
Essential Requirements
· Qualified Chartered or Certified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CPA).
· Minimum 8 years post qualification experience Technical/Professional skills:
· Senior financial leadership experience in a complex, multi‑location and/or multi‑currency environment
· Proven ability to lead and develop large, high‑performing finance teams
· Strong financial and management accounting expertise
· Extensive experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
· Demonstrated experience influencing at executive and Board level
· Strong risk management, compliance, and internal control experience
· Experience implementing or managing enterprise financial systems (preferably Agresso)
· Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills
· Strong project management and change leadership capability
· High level of IT proficiency, particularly Microsoft Office
Desirable Requirements
· Experience in the charity or not‑for‑profit sector
· Experience working in international business
· Treasury or investment management experience
· Understanding of fundraising, institutional funding, and donor compliance
· Experience with Unit 4(Agresso) and/or Salesforce
